RMteK

What is your main business activity?

RMTeK provides products and services that deliver high quality pan-tilt-zoom vision coupled with sensors and industrial control. As a system that can operate without the need for mains power or wired communication links, the solution utilises a full cloud services back-end which lets the operator have alarming on data thresholds, the ability to log in and review the current situation visually, while equally reaching through the internet and changing the state of connected devices at the remote location in real time.

How has the NBN impacted on the way you do business?

In planning for the on-going requirements of a growing cloud services platform, improved bandwidth provided to our premises by the NBN allows us to consider new options for data warehousing and live services failover that retain these services between our physical business locations in Armidale and Tamworth.

As the business grows to provide these services in international markets, linkages to data centres in these locations will be optimised by virtue of our NBN connections, a situation that will allow the business to provide a truly global operation from regional NSW.

In practical terms, when contrasting the differences in operating a business with the NBN, the number of telecommunication services subscribed to has been reduced along with overall communications costs, while available bandwidth and the amount of data available under these plans has increased.

In what way has the NBN impacted on your work/life balance?

The increased speed of the NBN service provides the scope to do more tele/video commuting for meetings and will no doubt promote the development of new and innovative business processes that promote efficiency in how we relate to our distributors and customers. In the same way, dealing with our supply chain and business associates is simplified when the full range of communication options are available, resulting in reduced time and transaction costs.

As Armidale residents, our homes are also connected to the NBN. Working at home to meet family commitments from time-to-time is now seamless as all business processes and links work at the same speed as sitting in the office. Flexibility is always attractive when asking people to go that extra mile and achieve a premium outcome.

Do you see any opportunities into the future for your business as a result of the NBN?

At the centre of the business model that RMTeK has developed is an online services platform that interrelates with remote hardware and people that can be located anywhere in Australia and increasingly around the world. Reliable, fast connectivity continues to expand our markets globally, the NBN will allow us to remain as a distributed business that will grow without the restrictions that normally apply to regional businesses.

How do you see the future of Armidale’s Digital Economy?

As the number of businesses that are attracted to Armidale to take advantage of the NBN increase, a critical mass of IT related companies will foster a culture of innovation that will see ever increasing collaboration at professional and personal levels. An atmosphere of energy in business will see a real potential for Armidale's Digital Economy to become self-perpetuating. In short, programs and incentives that are designed to foster the growth of IT business overall will result in a bigger Digital Economy for Armidale, this will result in the potential for existing business like RMTeK to grow.
