PLC Armidale

What is your main business activity?

The provision of high quality Independent Day & Boarding education for girls from Pre-Kinder to Year 12.

How has the NBN impacted on the way you do business?

PLC Armidale was fortunate to be the first location in Australia where the NBN was officially turned on. This enabled the school to be involved in many nationwide initiatives and pilot programs it would not have been able to prior to having the NBN connection, eg. the Mars Yard Project for Senior Science; the ABC Splash Program with Year 6.

Without the use of the NBN we would not be able to use technology to enhance learning as we do now. We use Google Mail as the server for the school's email accounts via Cloud technology, so there are no space issues, and there is no need to host technology here. The school's email speed is now instantaneous.

The NBN connection has provided the school the opportunity to say YES to projects such as the Mars Yard Project which exposes students to amazing people and expertise, where they are 'transported' to a simulated Mars environment (without the costs of organising a physical excursion). We have moved on from video conferencing to a more sophisticated version through the NBN connection.

The school's new phone system is now facilitated through the NBN connection. PLC Armidale has introduced the first stage of Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) for students, and due to the NBN connection, the school has the capacity for these students in various classes to simultaneously download files, given the good bandwidth now.

Do you see any opportunities into the future for your business as a result of the NBN?

In the past, the school has explored various distance education opportunities. With the NBN technology this option has become a real possibility and will be investigated. Future overseas partnerships are also on the agenda for exploration. Staff are also exploring a greater use of video conferencing for 'outside the class room' activities, eg. via a program called CANVAS.
